Our front yard looks beautiful!!

We've waited for most of the winter for winter - and today we're in luck! Don't get me wrong, we've had snow over the last couple of months, but it always seems to melt away in a matter of days. I know that some people think that's great, but not me! We live in Canada people and in Canada, we should have snow in the winter.

I think that both Zoë and Coullah tend to agree! Just check out these great shots of our snow dogs!

This was supposed to be a post about furry feet, but thought I need to comment on comments.

This blog is fun to write. I have met many great members of the Brighthope family - some which I have developed friendships with. I also have readers that don't have a BPS, but enjoy the antics of Zoë and Coullah. (And then there's Linda, Jeff, Piper, Rob, Kisa, Mika, Lucy and Reno!) It's great to see international readership too- Hi everyone!!!!!!

It's also fun to receive comments. I think the comments connect us, and might even spur a discussion or two about our dogs. What isn't fun is receiving comments that are not appropriate to post. Let's face it folks - there are alot of weird, weird humans out there (way weirder than any BPS could ever be!!) and sometimes I just don't know whether something is indeed an innocent typo, or meant to provoke through interesting language 'choices'. Suffice it to say, I will not post everything I receive. I ask those commenting, please spell check your comment or at least read it prior to sending!!! I apologize to those that have sent comments that haven't appeared on the blog - but kids read this blog and well....I ask that you re-read what you sent - you wouldn't post it either!!

Does your Blue like watching television?

Ours do! Any type of show featuring animals gets their attention. Coullah and Zoë watched an episode of 'The Nature of Things', featuring a special on animal cognition. Both were fascinated by prairie dogs, running lemurs and of course, wolves and dogs. Coullah will go right up to the TV and press her nose against the flatscreen (Kypros loves that!!!). Zoë will tilt her head to one side to listen.

If we're watching anything where there's a dog barking - both of them will immediately go running around the house, to look out the windows looking for this mystery dog.... hmmm...we can't smell another dog.... but it must be here somewhere........

Erika writes that June also loves watching animals on TV. Especially horses and birds. She can be in a dead sleep and if there is a horse in a scene of a show, she will perk up and watch intently. She had a really funny reaction to a crow on tv recently. It flew off screen, toward a window near the tv, so she ran over to the window to see where it went.

After a long day at work, we love to go home to our Blues, right? How does your Blue greet you??

Zoë

The Blue Tornado! Zoë is a bundle of energy when we arrive home. With major tail-wagging and a smiley face, the minute we walk in, she turns into a little Blue tornado. She'll start spinning around in circles - right through the laundry room and into the kitchen.

Once we have our coats off its time for a celebration! Zoe will grab her squeeky football and run around making noise to herald our grand return.

The final piece of the greeting - she'll wait until we're seated and nuzzle her face into us - almost turning into a ball - she likes the backs of her hind legs rubbed as she nuzzles and snorts - and until interrupted by Coullah!!

Coullah

The Happy Babbler! As we close the garage and make our way through the breezeway, we hear Coullah talking - it really is a babble! All of this singing and yipping and moaning!!! It's really hard to describe. All of this one doggy orchestra is accompanied by prancing and dancing and jumping.

Stage two - Coullah will grab a chewie toy - usually a nylabone and run upstairs to await us. This whole time she's babbling - but won't drop her bone.

Stage three - standing on the bed with her nyla in her mouth, she'll place her front feet on my shoulders all the while humming. She's expecting a nice back scratch and tummy rub.

June

The Happy Hugger: Erika writes: "June loves to run up to us when we come home and put her head/shoulders between our knees for a squeeze - we call it getting a "hug". She cries with joy and does figure 8s around our legs" But June loves everyone! According to Erika, she also does this to strangers at the dog park. "She will also walk up between two strangers standing together at the park and sit down, silently watching whatever they are watching until they notice her between them".

Winter trail walk adventure

A couple of weeks ago, Kypros and I packed up the girls for a winter trail walk. We had recently discovered a conservation area only a short drive from our house and thought we'd take the girls up there to check it out - we weren't disappointed!!! We'll definitely return - and can't wait until the summer to see what our new wildness fun park has to offer. Here are some pics:

As much as we'd like to let the girls off leash - at this point on our walk, there are way too many opportunities for getting into creeks, streams and ponds. Great for summer, but not so great in January!

Prepping the Frog Pond

We discovered that the Frog Pond is used as a skating rink in the winter. Local residents volunteer to shovel it off. Kypros and I took a walk out and it was perfectly smooth - I believe a private skate is in our future. Wow! With no one around, it's incredible that such a great little spot is just a 5 minute drive away!

Brighthope weighs in on sleeping dogs

Hi all,

On reading the post about our sleeping pups, Vicki wrote: "Sleeping on their backs starts very young, these guys will be 3 weeks old tomorrow". Thanks for the photo, Vicki!!

In regards to curling in the front paws when relaxing, Vicki says that definitely Ciron curls in his front paws and Ciron and Reign are half brothers. Marne usually sleeps with her head on her front legs but they are are not curled.

So for those of you who are interested in lineage - it's interesting to note that our littermates even have some traits of the magestic Ciron!

Wow!!! I'm always in wonder at how similar our Blues are. Erica wrote that her BPS June sits like Coullah all the time. Matter of fact, when I read the comment (see Part 3: Suede and Dax come for a visit) I felt like it was written about Coullah. It made me smile when I read the comment about how June sits at the top of the stairs, deciding whether its worth her while to come down. Coullah does *exactly* the same thing! She sits there to sit and ponder - and if she smells food - especially the peanut butter jar opening.... then down she runs! We actually had to put a rug at the bottom of the staircase as Coullah wasn't able to make the turn into the kitchen at such high speeds!!

I received a comment from Debbie. She confirms that her BPS, Ember, sits just like Coullah! We thought that it was so funny when she first starting doing it - Zoë of course, doesn't sit like that, but like Ember, she likes to spend alot of time on her back - hind legs splayed open, tail wagging and usually accompanied by a goofy grin. Debbie says that Ember does that while the family sits at the table and eats. Haha!! Not Zoë!

Our 'more mature' Blue saves that for relaxing on the sofa or cuddled up in blankets on the bed. She might start off curled up in a ball or on her side, but almost always ends up on her back, snoring away!

As soon as our little 'Cools' takes a seat from a play session, we know that nap time isn't far away. That's when we decided to call everyone in for snuggles, dinner and nap time.

Before I post Part 3 of the weekend sleepover, I've had a question from Erica about lineage.

Brighthope's Aftershock "Coullah"

Our smallest Blue was born on June 23, 2010. Coullah's parents are:

Shireoak Eye of the Storm "Marne"

Now officially, retired from breeding, Marne is enjoying her leisure time at Brighthope Kennels and Picardy Park. She is a gentle, friendly girl and apparently quite the "bowl licker"!!! Vicki and Dave know that with her sweet disposition, she has easily become the perfect Ambassador for the breed.

Reign was the "pick puppy" from the Suede/Dani litter born in May 2008. A very handsome guy, he attained his Canadian Championship in 2009. Reign's favourite pass time is a good game of "sticks".

I find that I can see both Marne and Reign in Coullah. I see the gentle, quiet of Marne - along with that beautiful face with those beautful eyes. Coullah's love of carrying sticks and other objects around is just like Reign. As she matures, I look see more of her doggie parents in her every day. My question is: Which one is the babbling talker!?!?!?!?

Brighthope Nola's New Life Zoë

Born May 25, 2009, Zoë is our original Blue. Her parents:

Beautiful Nola. We are so lucky to have met her. Her time on earth was way too short, but boy oh boy, was she loved by Dave and Vicki. She will never be forgotten.

CH. Brighthope Blue Suede Shoes "Suede"

Born April 21, 2006. Suede is not only Zoë's dad, but Reign's dad as well and therefore, Coullah's Granddad. He is one handsome Blue and a real sweetheart! Zoë gets much of her personality from Suede - along with the smiley face look. Both of them all usually all tongue and always look very pleased about something. Like Suede, Zoë turns in circles when we come home after work, is always on the lookout for squirrels. They are a real father/daughter team!

In March 2009, Suede obtained his Canadian Conformation Championship - so I guess Reign comes by his Championship quite naturally.

As a side note... I believe that Zoe's aunt, Phoenix, lives in California and is a lovable member of Sweetwater Kennels.

If only we could all have one big family reunion!!!!

Most of the fun happened in our backyard. All four Blues ran across the property, back and forth, chasing each other and stopping to occasionally sniff the air. There was also lots of activity in the trees - all kept their beautiful brown eyes open for squirrels and birds.

Suede and Dax come for a visit - Part 1

..."We're going to a wedding.... would you guys be interested in keeping Suede and Dax for an overnight visit?"

No need to ask us again! Absolutely!! Afterall, we had many humans for visits over the holidays, but the girls hadn't had the chance to host some doggie guests. Of course Suede is Zoë's father (and also Coullah's Granddaddy), Dax, well, he's not related to either of our girls directly, but he sure is a handsome, young fella!

There was plenty of excitement when the boys arrived on Saturday morning - including some action-packed play sessions in the backyard. With the water on the poolcover frozen, Dax made more than one trip across the 'skating rink'.

Zoë and Suede hit if off as always. When Suede would settle in for a rest, Zoë would quietly lay down beside her doggy daddy - nose to nose. It was really very sweet and we are convinced that there is strong bond between the two of them.

Funny thing though - as much as Coullah has always enjoyed Dax's company, she tired of him and after a while took herself out of the scene and came inside to rest. She seemed quite irritated that he followed her around all the time. Poor girl! She also seemed confused that perhaps she might have to share us with two more dogs! We got more than one sad, BPS face. That all being said, the visit was a great success and we would be more than happy to do it again. We took lots of shots of the visit - but only after quite some time, did I become aware of the Blue nose smear on my lens!! Oh well!

Kypros and I were very excited that our Coullah was featured as "Pet of the Week" in the Hamilton Spectator over last weekend! I had submitted the picture on a whim and it was a surprise and lots of fun to get this email:

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the long delay in posts, but Kypros and I have been super busy moving and trying to organize our lives. So far, we are very pleased with our choice to leave the city behind.

For those waiting to hear - the 2012 BPS calendars have been printed and look phenomenal!! We're just finalizing the ordering information page on the BPS Club of Canada site and then it'll be ready to roll. All will be ready in plenty of time for holiday gift giving, so no worries there. I think everyone will be very pleased with their photos!!

A billion thanks to everyone who contributed a photo or two - your efforts are greatly appreciated by the BPS Club.

I'll be posting an announcement here when the calendar ordering page is ready along with ongoing updates on Zoë and Coullah's big move to the country.

I haven't been on the blog as much as I'd like, as we're preparing for a BIG move! Kypros and I are both super excited about the move - especially since we'll be relocating to the country!! Our new address is much less 'urban', so we're looking forward to quiet, starry nights, more trail walks and a nice big pool!! (and yes, Kim... perhaps a small agility course!!)

Things have been topsy-turvy here. But a personal message first:

It's been quite some time since I've posted and since all has been quiet on the Blog, I guess it's time to provide more information about Coullah's sister, June. The funny part is that the Blog gets regular readership worldwide, but sadly, no one has even viewed the last post about June.... Tell me why everyone!!! Comments are appreciated as always...

But, despite the lack of viewership, I do have some great shots of her - compliments of Erika, so too bad!!! These are way to perfect to not share. The cuteness factor is over the top, so beware......

It's always fun to hear from a member of our extended Brighthope family and as luck would have it, Erika posted a comment on my blog.

Erika and her husband just happen to have one of Coullah's sisters. Brighthope's Seismic June, or "June" as she is known, currently lives in Michigan and, according to Erika is the talk of the town! Matter of fact, she believes that her BPS is the only one in the State. I don't doubt it one bit!

Over the next few posts I'll be introducing you, in pictures, to June aka "Puppy Number 5". For those of you who have read Coullah's history, she was "Puppy Number 6" - which makes June her big sis!

The next backyard project....

"Dig where?? No, no... not us!!!!"

Clearly not trained, professional contractors, our two Blues have made headway on their latest backyard project. Working without a backhoe, Coullah and Zoë are creating a unique backyard reno - one of which will suit their purposes.....

"Quick! Hide!!"

After clearing out every single trace of every raspberry bush, the girls have set their sights on our currant bushes. These fabulous bushes have given us many currants over the past few years - leading to very tasty jams!! I look forward every year to gathering my little harvest for that season's jam batch.

"Zoë, I think we're gonna get in trouble!!!"

The girls have been putting great effort into their project of the removal of the currants. Working from *behind* the bushes, they are slowly stripping them away, branch-by-branch. We actually didn't realize that this project was underway until recently.

It is evident that this fall, we'll have to burlap our currant bushes. I fear that when they finally shed their leaves, the tempting look of mere 'sticks in the ground' will be too much for our lovely doggies to handle and all will systematically disappear - never to be seen again!!! The girls do love chasing each other around the bushes, but their love of digging in the 'back 40' is far more tempting than a good game of chase.

Each time the 'crew' is onsite, great care is taken to keep the project 'under wraps'.

The proof? Well, we know the project is progressing. The giant holes tell us that. The dirty feet tell us that. But, catching the culprits ...oops!! I mean, 'Contractors' with the evidence - that just says it all!!

Meet Our Backyard Reno Team!

Zoë: Project Manager and Excavation Specialist

This project manager is a dirt removal specialist! Specializing in the use of using both front feet simultaneously, this experienced contractor excels at root removal. Tasty pieces of succulent roots are kept for chewing at a later date.

Coullah: The Rookie. Arborist and Landscaper

Branches are quickly snipped, snapped and removed. Creativity is key to this rookies work! Tender young leaves? No problemo! No branch too big or too small!! Easily bored with manual labour, this youngster prefers an avant garde design style leaving branches here and there - thereby making grass cutting a tedious process. Coullah takes many breaks during a work day to engage in other activities - namely trying to catch ants. Oh, the life of an artist!!!!!

Coullah and Zoë are hunting dogs.

Both have their favourite prey:

Coullah

Birds.

Squirrels.

Coullah has caught two birds. Was I pleased? No!! But, how can I get angry at her? It's in her genes. She's a hunting dog!!! She killed neither, but I think the poor things were so terrified they both died of shock - despite my efforts. During the last incident, once I realized what had occured, I quickly called her to me, she came immediately, but not before she pick up the bird softly in her mouth and on her way to the house, dropped it right at my feet!!

In regard to squirrels, she hasn't gotten close to one, but when viewed through our bay window, she is absolutely mesmerized by them.

With the birds, Coullah displays great skill in tracking. She is quick to follow direction, watches and learns very quickly. We are seriously considering putting her into tracking.

Birds.

Rabbits.

Skunks.

Zoë has eclectic hunting interests. I have to admit that her favourite prey are bees - preferably Bumblebees! She runs out our side door, pauses and points towards the honeysuckle bush. Then does a slinky dash towards the bush looking for bees.

We're thinking that Zoë might have been dropped on her head at birth because she looks for bees 365 days per year - even on the bleakest, frostiest January day! Of course we jest, she's a wonderful girl, but really.....hmmmm... there is further evidence of droppage on head:

Tonight, we got a good laugh. Zoe was tracking a big fly. It landed on a pile of poop. Zoë stopped in her tracks and pointed at the fly - lifing not a front food, but her back right!!!!! Haha!!!

When Zoë has located a small bird, she approaches very slowly and goes right up to it - smiling and wagging her tail. Never touching it. Probably not that comforting for the poor little bird, but the only thing Zoë would hurt is a fly!!! We love our gentle Zoë!

Rabbits and skunks are on the list as well, but she's come close to catching neither. She usually sees the neighbourhood skunk on her early morning walk - but at a distance. Rabbits are more common, but rabbits aren't fools and she never gets too close to them either!!

We're considering taking Zoë for training as well as she's got an amazing nose, but first we have to stop her from pulling on leash!!!

Despite their differences, our two girls have some similar interests, including relaxing whenever they aren't hunting or wrestling.....

Coullah discovers Picardy Pool

It's hot. Really hot. I know that many of you might not think a Canadian knows anything about hot. But, this Canadian does! We are in the middle of seriously warm weather - there's no sign of this hot spell disappearing anytime soon either. Temperatures ranging (with the 'Humidex') from 34C (93F) to a blistering 39C (102F). This Thursday, the weatherpeeps are predicting an incredible 48C (118F)!!!

Because of the heat, our Blues haven't been visiting the dog park - no shade and waaaaay to hot for our doggies. Instead, we filled up the new Picardy Pool and let the Blues vacation in their own backyard. They are pooped after playing around in the backyard during this heat and have been sleeping like champs!!

Zoë has always been a fan of the pool (as readers from last year know), Coullah has seen the pool, but hasn't ventured in until very recently.......

Look at her! She's in the pool!! Just all of a sudden, in she went. But....this calm picture wasn't the end of the story, so let's start at the beginning!!

Coullah didn't stop splashing about until all of the water was out of the pool!! She now goes back regularly for her 'swim'!!!

Part 3: Coullah and the Gang - A family reunion

After our PawsWay day, the gang headed back to our place for some old fashioned "Q" and a BPS reunion. The timing was great as it was just like we had a doggie family party for Coullah's 1st Birthday.

The dogs had a great time running around in the backyard, playing in the picardy pool and hanging out tableside. Although not a general rule - there were a couple of Picardies that were lucky enough to get a bit of burger....I'm pretty sure I even caught Dave sneaking Zoë a wee bit of burger meat!!!! Haha!! Busted Dave!!!!!

Where did we leave off? Well, after Vicki presented Dapper to the audience, various other breeds were presented as well - afterall, we had to give others the chance didn't we!?!?! Of course, we were all biased, but there were most definitely some very handsome dogs at French Breeds Day at Pawsway - some of the other invited breeds included:

This weekend, Brighthope Kennels and it's "fan club" hit Pawsway - Harbourfront, Toronto. The Duncans were invited to participate in a show highlighting the French breeds. The fan club - Kim, Pat, Terry, Kypros and I also headed down avec our dogs to promote this wonderful breed. Here are a few picture highlights of our day at the water:

Livin' is easy under a big old willow

Summer at the leash-free is generally great! Zoë has always enjoyed the park before the grass is cut for the first time. This seems to go for Coullah as well. Both of them have loved bouncing through the long grasses. Now that the city has cut the grass, our Blues still continue 'perimeter' checks of the property, but I guess it just no longer holds that mysterious appeal!

There isn't much shade at the park. Matter of fact, it can be down right desert-like on blistering hot and humid days.

Zoë and Coullah love the shade of an old willow tree at the far end of the park - it's a good resting spot in between rounds of wrestling!

Our doggies always tell us when they've had enough time in the heat. They're more than happy to head home and lounge in the backyard or in the cool of the house.

Cruelty in the 'hood

On our way back from a nice walk with the girls the other night, Kypros and I passed by a neighbourhood home that has two German Shepherds.

We remember when this family got their first dog - she's just a wee bit younger than Zoë. Oh, the attention she got from them! Oohing and ahhing over her flopping shepherd ears. She was in a public park way before she should have been, but what can you say??

Fast forward about a year or so. Another dog appears in the backyard - a male. Big and barky. The 'man' of the house tells us in broken English that he bred lots of Shepherds "back home" and has always had dogs. Great.

Hence began the raft of problems and complaints from the neighbours. Both dogs barked constantly, neither seemed to be exercised that much and very little enrichment activities appeared in the visible backyard. I think there was one stuffed animal at one point. Complaint after complaint - various visits - about 7 I believe from Animal Services. Everytime, their hands were tied. The dogs had been provided with food, water and shelter......No evidence of actual cruelty.

Then last summer, the dogs were brought up to the leash-free park - neither well socialized. Guess how long that lasted? There were a couple of people at the park that asked him to leave and not return. They haven't been back since.

Fastforward to the present.....

Life for this dogs appears bleak. There are medium sized wooden dog houses in the backyard. Both dogs are locked into their respective 'house' for the night. I hear them rustling around when I pass by in the early morning. The female had her first litter about 5 months ago - so young. I can't imagine Zoë haven pups so young. It appears that the pups have disappeared - I guess sold somewhere....

A walk is provided in the morning and sometimes in the evening. That's it for the exercise it seems.

When we passed by the other night, one of the dogs started barking at us and our Blues as we passed by. Just as we were passing their backyard a loud cry sounded - this man (who has always had dogs) had whipped it with a folded leather leash. We had initially thought the dog had run into the fence.The dog continue to cry in pain as we walked on.

We should have told him off. We really should have. Why didn't we?

Food for thought, I guess.

That's all I have to say about that.

10 Things to love about Coullah

It's hard to believe that Coullah has been with us over a month now. She has fit in so wonderfully with our family, it seems like she's been with us forever.

Everyday, we find something new to love about our little BPS. Here are 10 things to love about her:

1. Babbling. Yes, she speaks - kinda hums to herself and to us! She natters away when she first gets up in the morning, when she's alone in a room and when we come home at night.

2. Her walking gait. Coullah walks very differently than Zoë. Zoë almost prances along, Coullah plods...'doop, doop, doop'!! It is especially exaggerated when she's in full sniffing mode!

3. Her bedtime. Same time everynight. 8:30-9:00pm. She just gets up and goes to bed. Plain and simple.

4. Her big brown eyes. She has the most beautiful eyes - must lighter than Zoë. Big, brown expressive eyes - alot like her momma, Marne. Doesn't she look alot like her mom??

5. She loves being groomed. Coullah just relaxes - and almost fell asleep.

6. Her playfullness. Coullah loves to play - especially with Zoë's things!! Sometimes, Zoë will bring a toy over and just give it to Coullah, sit back and watch her play with it. (Zoë is such a good dog!!)

7. Belly rubs. Coullah greets us by laying on her back for a belly rub. She'll stretch her back legs out for the ultimate massage while she curls her front legs into her chest. She loves getting her rubs!!

8. She's great on leash!!!! Yahoo!! Kypros and I have a new rule (well, it's my rule, Kypros doesn't like it much!!): I walk Coullah and he has to take Zoë "the ultimate pulling machine"!!!

9. She already has a bunch of nicknames: Cools, Cooler, Baby C, Coulio, Coullah-moullah, Cou-cou.... embarrassing but true!!

10. She is the ultimate sweetheart!! What a super snuggler she is! Coullah is the sweetest dog you'd ever imagine. She is so gentle and just wants to crash out with you during a movie night or on the bed. Coullah likes to be close and will snuggle up tight, or rest her head on your lap. She's an angel for sure!

Ah...memories....Our first Blue is now Two! We love you Zoë!! You are a beautiful and smart girl and have been a great big sis to Coullah and we're so proud of you. Big hugs and kisses for your birthday... (and maybe a birthday biscuit or two....or three..!!!)

It's been raining for DAYS. It's gloomy. It's muddy. It has to end sometime, doesn't it?

I think we're all in need of some sunshine. In the meantime, I like to think of just a week or so ago and how absolutely exquisite our apricot tree looked and smelled...just like a little piece of heaven

During these rainy, dark days, it's also great to see our two Blues playing in the backyard. Coullah is definitely our snuggly, 'house' dog. Zoë likes to go out no matter what the weather. Coullah will take one look outside and turnaround and go relax on the sofa - Zoë is full speed ahead. She is proud of showing up back at the door covered in dirt and mud, always with a satisfied grin.

Right now, as I type, Coullah is completely stretched out on the sofa, mumbling to herself now and then (a topic for another day!!) while Zoë sits on the floor below chewing on a toy. Coullah winds down and is ready for bed around 8:30 everynight. Zoë can be more of a night owl - but usually takes herself to bed around 10 pm or so.

Anyhow, more about our Blues in the next post, but until then, here's a picture from sunnier days:

Runaway Blue!!!

The front door opened. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. The park across the street beckoned ... "Coullah"......

So what is a 10-month old BPS to do?? You got it!!

Over to the park she went, with Kypros in hot pursuit. Zoë stayed back with me - wagging her tail and looking ever so pleased with her young protégée. Funny enough, when Zoë was around Coullah's age, she did the exact same thing.

Just wait until Coullah spots the Mourning Doves under the Blue Spruce... and the robin nesting on the downspout... and the bumble bees on the honeysuckle....

Coullah's First Week

Well, week one is over. We certainly can't thank the weather for cooperating. It has been so rainy and overcast here. Every time the doggies come in the house, we have 8 paws to wipe! Zoë knows the drill and sits for a wipedown; Coullah, well, she's learning!!

Coullah follows Zoë everywhere! Us too for that matter. She is a super snuggler and enjoys cuddling on the sofa. Both girls share toys well and absolutely love running around in the backyard. We can't wait to get the doggie pool out this summer - it'll be great fun for both of them. Do I think getting Zoë a friend was a success?? Yes, absolutely!!! Both dogs tire each other out and provided us with many laughs over the last 7 days. We're also convinced that Coullah is pleased with her forever home as well.

This past Saturday was a rarity - we experienced beautiful sunshine and wonderful warm temperatures. Kypros and I decided to take complete advantage of our one day of nice weather and spent our day in the backyard with the Blues.

I don't know about anyone else's Blues, but Zoë, and Coullah (it seems so far) aren't *huge* fans of hot weather, but as long as there's some shady areas, all is well. With a large bowl of cold water and a toy or two, there wasn't much complaining.

We took a big chance today.
We went out for about 3 hours.
Dogs....loose in the house.
We came up with a bunch of scenarios:

We'd need a new sofa
We'd have no shoes left
Our living room rug would be in pieces
Our coffee tables would be reduced to wood chips....

As we approached the house, we saw a couple of flashing lights in the distance.... Kypros let out an audible "Oh-oh...". We laughed when we saw that it was a back-hoe making its way down our street.

We imagined that the dogs were in the house making sandwiches, playing poker....

The key went in the door. Inside??

PERFECTION.

Almost.

The casualties? A towel. One beat up sandal.
We are so proud of our babysitter: Zoë. She is the world's best dog, paws down!

Is Zoë contemplating Coullah's arrival?

From our point of view, Zoë is adjusting beautifully to our new addition. But is she? Does she like that we made a decision to give her a new little sister??? Or, did she enjoy being an only child??

I wish that I knew the answer to any of these questions!!!! I wish that we could have sat her down and talked about it. If only dogs had 'thought bubbles' above their heads!!

Have we seen any signs of sibling rivalry? Nope.
Have we seen any aggression? Nope.
Have we seen any possessive behaviours? Nope.

What we have witnessed is:

Food sharing.
Snuggles.
Lots of kisses and licks.
Comradarie.
Tail wagging.
Play fighting.
Chase games.

Kypros and I can only hope that our two Blues become the best of friends. There is only so much we humans can do, the rest is up to our dogs. I think the most important thing we can do is give them their space, give equal hugs and love, but treat them as individuals - with their own likes and dislikes. We've already seen the huge difference in personality between the two.

Relaxing in the shade on Easter Weekend

Zoë: Is playful, energetic, sensitive and a free spirit. She looks at you with her big brown eyes and you can see her searching your face - I swear she can read my mind. Zoë is very emotional and is pure joy. Belly rubbings are tops on her list. She loves being outside - she is a real 'tom girl' - nothing is too wet or too muddy for this girl. Trail walks are always popular, loud traffic - NOT!!

Watching Zoë run through an open field is really a beautiful thing. The pure joy on her face is a sight to be seen. Her exuberance is unbelievable and her happiness makes us smile every night when we open our door and she rushes out to greet us.

Coullah: Being new to our family, we have already discovered a few things about our little 10 month old Blue. She is a real girlie-girl. She is a super snuggler with a BPS 'sweetness' that is ten-fold. Those of you who have a BPS know what I mean here! Coullah *loves* belly rubs and ear scratches. She always looks to see where we are before she acts. She is lacking in confidence, but we think that is just age and the fact that she's in a new environment. But, she is constantly looking to Zoë for leadership and direction. Coullah has been a 'country girl' for 10 months and I don't see that ever changing.

Every minute that Coullah is with us brings her closer to her new pack. We hope that she accepts and grows to love Kypros, Zoë and me as much as we are beginning to love her.

As we travel down our path together, I will share our funny moments, our serious moments, our beautiful moments and everything in between. Enjoy our new journey everyone!

Who is this little Blue??

Our new little Blue was named after the Ontario Earthquake of 2010. She was actually born the day of the earthquake - June 23 - hence the name, "Aftershock". So that makes today, April 23, her 10th month Birthday!!!!

So, to get the lineage straight: Suede is Zoë's dad. Reign is Suede's son. So, that makes Zoë and Coullah second cousins. But we're just going to refer to them as 'sisters'!!

What a lovely little girl! She slept throughout the night - so did Zoë for that matter. A wee bit of snoring, but that's it. We have been so impressed with Coullah. We took her away from Brighthope, the only home she's ever known and asked her to live with us. It must have been overwhelming. New people, new dog, new house, new smells, new sounds, new routine..... With all of this, she has been so good. So much to ask from a wee pup. All we can do is love her and hope that her transition will continue to be a smooth one.

I know that Zoë is doing her best to welcome her new forever friend...

After a nice visit with Vicki and Dave at Brighthope Kennels, and a warm goodbye, we left Hanover with one extra passenger: Coullah. She was so good in the car. Curious, she cuddled up next to me and watched out the window for the 2 hour drive.....

Once at her new home, both our doggies walked into the house and tails started to wag!

After a nice long drink of cold water, we took both our Blues outside for some playtime.

Our two Blues had a romping great time in the backyard. Coullah did a ton of investigation into every inch of her new backyard. Luckily, she has no interest in chewing wood - one of Zoë's favourite things to do.

One thing that we didn't expect so soon was the amount of kisses we'd get from our new little one. She is such a sweet, sweet puppy. She came over at intervals to cosy up to both me and Kypros - showering us with kisses and cuddles.

After dinner, we set up Coullah's crate with a couple of Zoë's baby blankets. But, where is she right now?? Well, as I type, she's snuggled on the sofa with me.... xo There's already been a couple of belly rubs - a BPS favourite! Of course, Zoë is our first Blue, our Angel, but Coullah has quickly found a special place in our hearts.

Leash-Free Expectations: The annual rant

I haven't done a dog park rant in about a year - and unfortunately, it's time for me to address leash-free etiquette yet again.

The issue:
Last Friday, we were at our local leash-free. It was a great bunch of dogs (and people!). At one point in the evening, a gentleman entered the park with his female bulldog, "Angel". He kept her on leash. He made his way around to each dog to see how his dog would react. Zoë was over at the other end of the park. Someone asked this owner if he would be taking Angel off leash. He answered that "I have to see about this dog first" (meaning Zoë). He headed over towards Zoë. I don't know what type of body posturing Angel did, but Zoë immediately put her tail down and slunk away - back towards us and the other group of dogs.

This should have set off an alarm in the owner's head. It didn't. He approached the rest of the group and took her off leash.

Angel immediately b-lined for Zoë. She immediately attacked our Blue. Zoë is not the type of dog that will fight back and immediately cowered, but the Angel persisted. It lunged continuously at our little Blue. I quickly reached in, grabbed Angel by the collar and pulled the 90 lb dog off and away from Zoë. Meantime, Kypros secured Zoë.

We quickly took Zoë to the opposite end of the park. She sat beside a picnic table shaking. We checked her and found that the Bulldog had cut her right beside her eye.
Great.

The gentleman had meanwhile re-leashed his dog and was making his way towards us. He kept his distance, but asked, "Is your dog OK?" Kypros answered that she had been cut by her eye. He didn't acknowledge this, but turned back, reached down, patted Angel on the head and walked away.

No apology. Nothing. Nada.

The Skinny:
Angel has been coming to the dog park for about 1.5 years. Apparently, she was boarded for a week and after that, the owner witnessed a serious personality change - aggressive and hostile. He stayed away from the dog park for months, walking his dog around the park, but not bringing her in. He has recently started bringing her back in.
We also learned that night that Angel has a "problem" with black dogs.

The question:
If the owner knows his dog has 'issues', why isn't she muzzled and for that matter, why bring her in at all?

My opinion (for what it's worth):
At a leash-free dog park, there is an expectation of safety. As responsible owners, we need to trust not only the dogs, but the people who frequent the park. Many of us pay our volunteer membership rate of $10 to Leash-Free Mississauga. It seems that those who cause the most problems are non-members who always shout about their "rights" to be in the park. Fine and fair enough. But please people, if your dog is aggressive, if you don't have control, please keep your dog away from the responsible dogs and their owners.

Zoë, by the way, is fine and dandy. She has been back at the park since and had a great time. She is still the best of buddies with Rocky the American Bulldog - proving it’s not the breed, its’s what’s behind the leash that counts!!!

Coullah isn't a little puppy anymore!!!

I received an email late last week from Vicki at Brighthope Kennels. On return from a great trip to Germany, she found that two females had gone into heat - Allure and COULLAH!!!!

We made the decision to keep our new addition at Brighthope until her heat is over - in about 3 weeks.
According to Vicki, Coullah doesn't understand why she can't play with her friends..... poor baby!!

Kypros and I were looking forward to picking her up this weekend - and have been asking Zoë for the last couple of weeks, "Where's Coullah???" Oh well, it gives us more time to get the Spring gardening done and potentially get the work on the basement underway.

Vicki will keep us posted on how she's doing and when she estimates the heat to be over. Then, up to Walkerton we'll go and pick up Zoë's "little sister"!!!!

There's chocolate. There are cakes, pies and pastries. But none of them compare to the incredible sweetness of a sleepy puppy. So, consider this a warning - the next set of pictures are some of the sweetest you'll ever see - definitely, under the category of things that make you go, "Ahhhhhhh...."

It sure doesn't take much to amuse a BPS puppy - and Coullah is no exception! No expensive toys required for this little Blue. She quickly dragged her cuddle blanket out and amused herself for about 15 minutes - an eternity in puppy time!

Hi Everyone!

First reported in Burlington, a strange virus has made its way to Mississauga. One of the symptoms reported is the development of a serious hole in one's head. Irrational decisions of those infected cause friends and family to develop eye-rolling and head-shaking behaviours.

Having both come down with this virus, Kypros and I are pleased to announce our new pup: Coullah. Our new little girl is another wonderful Blue Picardy Spaniel from Brighthope Kennels. Until she actually lands in her 'forever home' on April 9, I'll present a series of Coullah in pictures - from our first meeting on September 11, 2010.

Blame it on the rain

Rain.
I love the sound of rain. I love the freshness that it brings. It signifies that Spring is on its way.

Rain.
I don't like rain. It's wet. It seeps into the ground. It gets into foundation cracks. It causes basement flooding.

Clean up begins

On the evening of March 5, we had a wonderful surprise in our finished basement. Underneath a wall of bookshelves, below our carpet, rain had penetrated our house! We had a couple days of rain - heavy rain. Finally, it had seeped through an unknown crack in our foundation. We are in the process of 'recovery' and hope to have the basement completed sooner rather than later.

So for a wonderful Sunday morning, Tracy and I enjoyed chatting and sipping our coffees while the boys toiled at the macho job of demolition:

On a recently cold winter night, Tracy, Rob and Rocky came over for pizza and to watch the Leaf game. When the doorbell rang, Zoë ran to the door - she was practically 'snoopy dancing' when she saw Rocky!! It was difficult to get Tracy and Rob into the house with all the puppy prancing!

The dogs behaved themselves surprisingly well, spending most of their time wrestling and playing with all of Zoë's toys.

A Blue Genius!

Rarely, if ever, have I written two posts in one night, but tonight, Kypros and I were flabbergasted at how intelligent our Blue is. Through the posts, you might have guessed that Zoë could be easily labelled as sweet, lovable and goofy. We always thought that being a purebred hunting dog, she's no IQ slouch, but honestly, while writing the post about Dax, she did something, that to us, was nothing short of genius.

The Love Affair with Rawhide

Zoë loves rawhide chews.

She can sit down and have a chew for an hour or so at a time. There are a bunch of butt-ends hiding all around the house - inside and out. She has her favourites and will hide them safely out of our reach. Before she decides to chill out for a while, she'll go and find her favourite 'hide, bringing it to wherever we are and lay down for a little chew.

The problem? She knows where the new bag of rawhides is kept and prefers to have a fresh, new rawhide at her disposal at all times. We are most definitely curbing this habit.

Her genius moment

Crying for a new rawhide, Kypros decided to use reasoning and logic tonight to explain to Zoë why a new rawhide wasn't necessary. There was my husband, seeking out all rawhides in our family room. While arranging them on the floor (in order of size folks!), he carefully explained to our very observant Blue that because of the vast number of 'hides, a new one was not necessary. He patted her head and sat down.

Here it comes everyone....what did Zoë do?

She looked at Kypros, looked at all her rawhides side-by-side on the floor, went over to her toy basket, rifled around and TA-DA!! grabbed another chewy bone and carried it over to the pile of bones, dropping it to the pile!! Incredible - seriously folks - she made the association almost immediately. There are many toddlers that wouldn't make that association as quickly. Proud with herself, she grabbed the chewy bone and sat down for a well-earned chew.

All of us BSP lovin' folk are holding our heads up a little higher tonight. Not only are they beautiful, silly and goofy, they are without a doubt, incredibly intelligent!! Cheers to our Blues everyone!

BPS Triple Threat: Beauty, Brains and Sense of Humour

Welcome Dax!!!!

We are excited to announce that there's a new Blue in Kim, Pat and Terry's life. Everyone, please welcome Dax to this BPS family!

Kim explained that the new addition is named Dax (named after a city in France). After a little bit of research, I've learned that Dax, is a very old, small commune in south-western France. Famous for it's spas, it was founded by the Romans under the name, Civitas Aquensium - it's reputation was further strengthened when visited by Julia, the daughter of the First Emperor of Rome, Octavian Augustus. There is most definitely a lot of history here. Quite the handle for a little Blue to live up to!! But, being a Blue, and with a daddy like Ciron, I'm sure he'll be up to the challenge.

Ciron's only son is now under the guidance of Zoë's handsome daddy, Suede. Zoë can't wait to visit!!!

Our little spaniel absolutely loves cold weather and snow. This is our first major snowfall and Zoë couldn't have been happier!

Look at that grin!!!

Zoë gets so excited once she's out in the snow - she'll run, full tilt - like a complete maniac through all the white, fluffy stuff. She'll eat it, lie in it, dig in it and never seems to get cold. The one thing she does suffer from is snowballs between the toes!! This slows her down, but only for a couple of minutes - some focussed 'toe' work usually melts those little snowballs and she's ready to get back out there.

Cold?? Nah!!

The other day, I took her over to the park across the street. We met up with her friend Mika and her old buddy, Piper. For a little Blue that has been feeling down, this was the perfect activity. Together the three dogs charted new trails through the pristine snow. But, that's for another post!!

Life after Gus

I had a lot of different posts lined up - mostly humourous bits about Zoë and some of her new Christmas toys. I even had a great one with Zoë and Gus. But, it's not quite time for that yet. Tonight, its a week since we lost Gus. Zoë continues to mope around the house. She looks for Gus under the bed, beside the bed, behind the bathroom door.... She's started to sleep in Gussy's favourite spots as well. Our vet, Dr. Paul Walker, told us that it was going to take some time for Zoë and that she will continue to mourn the loss of her cat brother for a few more weeks. I can't say enough about the excellent care provided by Dr. Walker and staff.

The Pets of 2010

Kypros and I were very proud of Zoë and Gus in 2010. Despite the age difference, peace had come between the two. It was amazing to see the friendship that developed. This was more than a truce it was an affinity - a bond. We were so pleased with both of them. If there was such a contest, both would be 'paws' down winners of dog and cat of the year!

Gus: A True Companion

This is Zoë's Blog. But, today, it belongs to Gus.

Sadly, our dear ginger tabby passed on New Year's Eve. He had a sudden and very acute pancreatic episode and despite the best efforts of his veternarian, he slipped away from us early Friday night.

Never could there have been a more class act than this cat. He was a true companion and a kind soul. A better friend than most of us will ever have.

When I met Gus, he was the 'clinic cat' at a local veterinary hospital. He had been abandon there, left in a sealed cardboard box. He had been living at the clinic for two years. I feel in love with his larger-than-life personality and his incredible ego! That was Thanksgiving 2000. His age could only be estimated, but the consensus was that he was at least 3 yrs old when I adopted him. He has been my "G" for very close to 11 years. When Kypros came into our lives, his relationship with Gus got off to a rocky start. But, they quickly became fast friends for life.

For a cat that had suffered the negative side of humanity, he was a trusting, upbeat guy - always there to greet you at the front door, always there when you tried to make the bed (with him in it!!), always there when you needed a friend. He was affectionate, playful and accepting - even to a crazy Blue Picardy Spaniel. He taught Zoë who was really "The Boss" of the household. He pretended to hate her, but he had allowed her into his house and access to his "humans". He allowed her to share his last day...

Zoë knew something was wrong with her cat brother. Before we took Gus to the vet, Zoë gently jumped on the bed where he was. She lay down very close to him and just sighed. She stayed there with him until it was time for us to take Gus. It was the sweetest and most heartbreaking moment that either Kypros or I had witnessed between the two of them.

There is an uncanny quietness in our home today.

We love you Gussy, Nola will be a dear forever friend to you now ........

Winter Woofstock: Recap

What can I say? We packed up the Blue for a trip down to Winter Woofstock 2010 hoping for a fun-filled morning.

Not so much.

Although there were tons of people, there really wasn't much to do there. It was just a sea of people retailing with their dogs in tow. Don't get me wrong, I love retail - but not that much retail. It was a huge event - but it was mostly doggie clothes, toys, treats, food. Yes, all things for dogs and that's appropriate, but wow!! Some of the more interesting booths belonged to those of the rescue associations and breed specific groups.

We checked out the fashion show (Zoë is not really into sequined pjs or tiaras!); there was a microchipping service ($30 per dog); pictures with Santa (a huge, frenzied line-up) - even someone selling subscriptions to local newspapers. One mystery area was the VIP Lounge. Not sure who or what you had to be to enter - but there wasn't anyone in there when we walked by! Unfortunately, we also missed the Wiener Dog Race and the Running of the Pugs - sorry folks!!!

The most puzzling feature of Woofstock was the Doggie Daycare area. I mean, why????

On a positive note, Kypros and I were very impressed with Zoë. She doesn't have much experience with large groups of people, but we were very impressed with her. She was good - so good in fact that we received compliments from complete strangers! Once they found out that she was still young, they were shocked at how well-behaved she was. This confirms that Zoë is definitely a contender for Dog of the Year!

Benefits of attending? We did get some great swag and Zoë did get a new collar from Hustle Up! and a tasty dog treat or two and a complimentary copy of the Toronto Star. All in all, we spent about 2.5 hours at Woofstock and headed home. Will we go next year? Probably not to the Winter Woof - but we might check out Summer Woofstock.

Winter Woofstock 2010: November 27-28

What a perfect day for Winter Woofstock!!

Held annually each summer in Toronto, this year, dogs are lucky enough to get a Winter Woofstock as well. This past summer was way too warm to take Zoë - she hated the hot, humid days. The winter woof is held indoors (on the CNE Grounds).

As it's the prime gift giving season, Woofstock has a ton of vendors offering a variety of fun and practical services, toys, fashion, treats and accessories made exclusively for dogs. Just in time for retailing!!!!!

Prime events include the "Wiener Dog Race" and the "Running of the Pugs". Neither of much interest to our Blue, but it should be fun for us nonetheless! There is a full schedule of events for each day on-line for anyone interested.

If it looks like a hunting dog....

..... it probably is a hunting dog.

As most of you know by now, this breed is indeed a true blue (pardon the pun!) hunting dog. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Zoë has never hunted - except for bees and flies. She has also taken more than a passing interest in squirrels as well. Fortunately for the squirrels, she can't climb trees!!

So, in the spirit of 'hunting' and all things 'Field & Stream', we like to take Zoë on forest and trail walks - leash-free whenever possible. The latest was to the Etobicoke Valley for a walk on the wild side!

Gus and Zoë: The Best of Frenemies

Zoë and Gus have a very interesting relationship. Kypros and I use to think that Gus hated Zoë ('hate' is kind of strong, but if you saw them together....). We used to make incredible effort to reprimand Zoë for 'picking' on Gus. I mean, look at him... he's so cute and small....ahhhh....look at him people!! He's a cutie-patootie!!

But, now, we're beginning to see their relationship from a different angle......

Gus actually amuses himself with Zoë. Yes, he is old; yes, he is a cat; yes, he weighs about 50 lbs less than Zoë, but his ego is gigantic and he is a regular Kitty Galore.... conniving! He actually enjoys his run-ins with his "puppy sister". He even goes in search of her -just last night, Zoë was crashed out. Gus approached and when Zoë ignored him, he slapped her in the muzzle. Our Blue continued to ignore him , so what did Gus do?

He slapped her again - twice, in quick succession. Still no reaction from the Blue, just maybe a glance. So Gus just trotted away, tail in the air, ego intact.

Zoë, on the other hand, just wants to be friends with Gus. She thinks all of his slapping and hissing means "I love you"! She follows him around, sticks her nose in his hair (which he hates) and just watches his every move.

Captured on camera, this rare moment shows the 'frenemies' sharing a very messy bed (compliments of Zoë).

Last weekend, we had two of them out in the backyard, all went well, until Zoë took her rawhide over to show Gus. Gus quickly moved behind the roses and well...

Bagel, anyone?

Well, its getting brisk at the dog park - but not brisk enough to freeze the muddy perimeter! Our Blue loves this area and tries hard to get other dogs to follow her down. There are those brave few that follow, such as Rocky:

One dirty American Bulldog!

Rocky loves running down to the perimeter, but I think sometimes, he forgets that he will eventually have to run back UP the hill. On a side note, for some weird reason, Rocky ends up sliding in dog poop more than any other dog I know at the park. (Thanks to those who don't scoop!!) Poor Rocky, he's not a fan of the bathtub!

Zoë has recently found another partner in crime, Bagel!!

Bagel is a 'hound' adopted from the local animal services. She is a lovely dog - full of energy and very friendly. The thing about Bagel is that she has really long legs - much longer than Zoë, so despite the fact that she followed the Blue into the murkey trenches, only one dog emerged caked with mud:

After this romp with Bagel, Zoe was ABSOLUTELY filthy. Caked and slimy with mud, we loaded her into the SUV and promptly carried her into the house and straight into the bathtub. Although she likes being bathed, this one tested her patience! She had to be rinsed twice before we got any shampoo on her. The mud just rolled off her - from nose to tail. Zoë is always so happy with herself when she's filthy and smelly, so this bath did not go over very big at all and she was very intolerant of the blowdry!

Although this won't be a popular thing to say, I can't wait until the ground freezes (and neither can Rocky!!)

An Impromptu Baby Shower...Picardy Style

Our friends, Christine and Matt welcomed a new addition to their family in May, William Crawford. He is such a sweet little guy! We recently had parents and baby (and Pug!) over for a BBQ. It was Zoë's first experience with a baby. She has been around little kids at our place, but never a baby on 'home turf'. We had complete confidence in her with William - she's just so sweet with kids.

Anyway, after dinner, we were sitting outside and William was on Christine's lap. 'Wills' was being such a good boy - just sitting quietly and observing his surroundings. At this point, our Blue decided to make her move.....

Zoë cautiously approached William for a welcome 'sniff'....

Home Alone?? Not!!

Well, this has been a hard two days. I've started a short term contract downtown and our little Blue is now in charge of the house. It's been brutal leaving her in the morning, but she's been absolutely fantastic! Kypros and I are both so proud of her. Now, she goes for a nice walk in the morning and has her Yaya (Greek for Grandmother) come in during the day to let her out for a potty break and to spend some time playing in the backyard. Another bonus of having 'Yaya' come over is that, well, being a Yaya, she can't stop cleaning our house!!! Wohoo!! Coming home to a happy Blue, ironing done, kitchen clean - it really can't be beat. House-sitting and puppy-sitting in one! Thank you Christina for all of your help - you've been a life saver!

When we come home, we're off to the leash-free for a romp. Some of Zoë's best buddies are at the park after work - including CJ, Rocky and her new buddies: Alice, Louis and Charlie. Zoë needs to let loose at night and once we're back home, she plays with her toys and chewies and around 8:30, she's crashed out, ready for another day. What a super girl!!

It's been a real transition, but so far, so good. (Just don't ask Gus for his opinion!!!)

What can I say about Thanksgiving long weekend 2010? We've had amazing weather - something to be truly thankful for. With the fall colours and the sunny bright skies, Kypros and I thought it was a perfect day to take Zoë to Erindale Park for a nice, long, leisurely walk.

With our new, retractable 16 ft leash, Zoë had a blast exploring the forest paths and the Credit River. Except for one roll in something fishy, the venture was a complete success! After a full 2 hours, our little Blue opted for a siesta on the sofa for about 4 hours. Sounds like a perfect day to me!!

Tonight is the first home game of the Toronto Maple Leafs people!! That means that Summer is really over. Now, we can look forward to hockey (and more hockey and even MORE hockey), football (Go Bengals!!), dark mornings and early nights, hot chocolate and all the fluffy white stuff you can shovel.
